About Justina

Justina Chan-Lovatt is a Canadian painter whose work explores the space between representation and abstraction. Inspired by the natural beauty of Georgian Bay, she creates expressive landscapes that capture not only what is seen, but also what is felt.

Colour is at the heart of her artistic practice. Through bold palettes, subtle shifts in tone, and energetic mark-making, she seeks to convey the atmosphere, rhythm, and emotional resonance of the natural world. Her paintings distill landscape into simplified forms and gesture, inviting viewers to experience a place through sensation, memory, and feeling.

Justina’s artistic journey began through a traditional apprenticeship, in Lingnan painting style, under the renowned artist Yip Kam Fong and Shan Bai Qin from 1994 to 2017. She later continued her studies at the Toronto School of Art. Today, she primarily works in Acrylic and has developed a distinctive approach using a Catalyst silicone wedge, a tool that allows her to create dynamic marks and work intuitively on large-scale paintings.

Her work has been exhibited in Canada, Hong Kong, and the United States. She was a finalist in Quest Art’s Art Slam in both 2024 and 2025. She lives and works near Georgian Bay, where the ever changing landscape continues to be a constant source of inspiration.
